Gender Discrimination; Even in Pornography

In Nigeria, it is an unspoken custom that “womanhood” is reduced to the second class citizen and more often addressed to be only useful in household activities especially in the ‘bedroom’ and ‘Kitchen’. This discrimination still eats deep into the African Society at large. An average Nigerian lady is modest, moralistic, and even sometimes religious; these features not expected to be possessed by an average Nigerian successful man. She is expected to be upright, not engaging in disgraceful activities, and that is why when she is caught ‘kissing’ a particular man’s son on the street, married or not, she is looked with disdainful eyes, no judgement whatsoever against the male partner. Why and How then do we have more Nigerian ladies logging into porn sites than our Nigerian men, considering the fact that watching pornography is an immoral and dirty act in this part of the world?

Isn’t hypocritical that Women have to hide their “ungodly act” while the male gender flaunts around with it? I mean ladies are the forefront for 97% porn videos; the videos are downloaded to watch the ” ‘pornstar’ Candy crush Lucy” while the guy’s faces are blurred in some cases. It is normal for Men in the Society to have porn videos on their phones, in fact, they watch them in public but when a Lady; married or not, old or young; is seen watching just a kissing video between two persons, she’s “appalling”. Again, funny how we have more Nigerian ladies logging into the PornHub sites than Nigerian Men.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of pornography neither am I a feminist (wait… maybe I am a little bit). But I believe that if a particular gender can acceptably act in a certain way in society, the other gender should not be discriminated when involved in that same act. So if a man is allowed to have more than one sex partner, why can’t a Lady? Recently my parents were involved in a “Jaz GBA argument” on why a man should get married to more than one wife, of course, my dad was on the supporting side. My mum just concluded all her speech with, “if I should accept you sleeping with another lady, then accept me sleeping with another man”. See tantrums that evening… Men!

I’m not saying we should be involved in sexual misconduct and activities that will affect our minds, I for one would have my conscience pricking me until i ask for forgiveness from the Almighty. What I’m just saying is, if as a guy you watch porn, but you get irritated when a lady watches porn then know you are wrong and need to check yourself. Whatever you feel is wrong for a Lady to indulge in, cheating with another man, having a sugar daddy, not knowing how to cook, but you do them, my guy please look “inside” your soul. Same goes to the ladies. Let us promote equality and equity in every ramification.

But hey, this is my view, I’m going to stop here while I get insights from you readers. Comment your views below on the comment box, you can also gist me on your experience of any kind of discrimination relating to the topic.

    • There is actually, equality is treating everyone in the same manner and equity is more like giving everyone what they need to…. Uhm succeed in their endeavours. So if my brother an I are given the same portion of meal, that is equality but if my brother eats more than I do, and he is given a larger portion of food, while I’m given a substantial portion of food to feel me, that’s more like equity.

    • Very understandable, but we can work towards it. We might not be able to achieve it but something close to it. We also believe Nigeria can never not be corrupt, doesn’t mean we should give up in fighting corruption

  1. The topic of equality amongst both genders might never work due to the fact that even the bible places higher authority in the hands of the men as seen here: “Wives, submit to your own husbands as you do to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:22).
So, if one is tryna change the world’s view about the inequality between them, I think such person might be going against the instructions of the bible. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in support of “discrimination” but equality is a no, no.
For me, if a lady wants to watch porn, it’s her cross. It has nothing to do with me. And if you’re a good Christian even as a man you’ll know you’re to treat people with justice no matter the gender. So, bottom line, treat people right and give honour to whom honour is due. Don’t drag it. Shikena!
